James Simpson (1792-1868) British soldier; Chief of Staff in the Crimea 1854 during the Crimean (Russo-Turkish) War of 1853-1856. Appointed Commander of the British forces in succession to Lord Raglan, 1 July 1855. Created General after capture of Sebastopol 11 September 1855. Wood engraving after photograph by Roger Fenton.
