Scene from "The Scarlet Letter" (1850) novel by the American author Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864). Set in the times of the dour Puritan pioneers of New England the heroine, Hester Prynne, has to wear the scarlet letter A for Adultery embroidered on her bodice. Here she is being led to the public pillory. Illustration by Hugh Thomson (1860-1920) for an edition published in 1820. Halftone.
