Robinson Crusoe and his companion Friday, left, with the English Captain whom he has helped to subdue the mutiny on his ship. After 28 years marooned on his island, Crusoe joins the ship and sails for home. "The Life and strange and surprising Adventures of Robinson Crusoe" by Daniel Defoe first published 1719, based partly on 1704-1709 experiences of Alexander Selkirk and claimed by some to be first English novel.
