Johann Christoph Friedrich Schiller (1759-1805) German poet, dramatist and historian, writer of "Sturm and Drang" verse plays. He numbered Goethe among his friends. His "An die Freude" was set by Beethoven in the last movement of his Ninth (Choral) Symphony. Engraving from "The Gallery of Portraits" Vol VII by Charles Knight (London, 1837).
