William Henry Fox Talbot (1800-1877) of Lacock Abbey, Wiltshire. English mathematician, physicist and pioneer in the field of photography. In 1841 he patented the calotype process which produced a negative from which multiple copies could be made. He was one of the first to decipher the cuneiform inscriptions from Niniveh. Engraving from "Les Merveilles de la Science" by Louis Figuier (Paris, c1870).
