Jons Jacob Berzelius (1779-1848), Swedish chemist who introduced modern chemical symbols. Hhe discovered the elements selenium, thorium and cerium, and was first to isolate others. He accurately determined atomic weights, establishing the laws of combination and John Dalton's atomic theory.
