"The Burning of Thomas Tomkins Hand by Bishop Bonner". Engraving from a 1776 edition of John Foxe "The Book of Martyrs", London. Edmund Bonner (c1500-1569) Bishop of London, torturing Tomkins in an attempt to make him accept the doctrine of transubstantiation. Tomkins refused and was burned at the stake at Smithfield, London, on 16 March 1555.
