The Death of Sapphira', 1654-1656, Oil on canvas. Nicolas Poussin (1594-1665) French painter. Ananias and his wife Sapphira, were members of the early Christian Church in Jerusalem. According to the 'Acts of the Apostles' they lied to the Apostles about the proportion of their wealth they were presenting to the Church. Ananias died immediately and Sapphira three hours later.
