Stenopterygius megacephalus von Huene Posidonienschiefer / Lower Jurasic / Holzmaden / near Stuttgart / Germany. This specimen is one of the first described ichthyosaurs in which the outline of the soft tissues of the tail / dorsal fin and paddles are indicated. No actual skin material survives / only a cyanobacterial film which formed as a mat over the decaying carcass / so that what is seen represents a combination of reality and the skill of the preparator.
