crewman from US Navy PBY rescue mission who had jumped into the water of Rabaul Harbour in 1944. He had rescued a badly burned Marine pilot, shot down while bombing the Japanese-held fortress of Rabaul. Japanese coastal defence guns were still firing at the plane, so the crewman resumed post as machine gunner without taking time to put on his clothes.
