Légende
Meleager. Engraving from 'Tableaux du temple des muses' (1655) by Michel de Marolles (1600 - 1681), known as the abbé de Marolles; a French churchman and translator. In Greek mythology, Meleager was a hero venerated in his temenos at Calydon in Aetolia. He was already famed as the host of the Calydonian boar hunt in the epic tradition that was reworked by Homer. The Fates predicted he would only live until a brand, burning in the family hearth. Meleager chose Atalanta, a fierce huntress, whom he loved.
