Apparatus developed by James Prescott Joule (1818-89) for determining the mechanical equivalent of heat. A container with water, oil or mercury contains blades attached to a spindle. A rope attached to a drum is wound around the spindle. A weight falling against the scale rotates the blades. Raising and lowering the weights increases the temperature of the liquid.
