John Smeaton (1724-1792), English civil engineer, born in Austhorpe near Leeds, Yorkshire. In the background of the portrait is the third lighthouse on Eddystone Rock in the English Channel off Plymouth, Devon, which he built between 1757 and 1759. He also carried out research into the mechanics of windmills and waterwheels and improved the Newcomen steam engine. From The Gallery of Portraits, Volume II, by Charles Knight (London, 1833) .
