Robert Blake (1599-1657) English naval commander, born in Bridgwater, Somerset. During the English Civil War, he fought on the side of Parliament against Charles I. In 1649, Blake was made a naval general (admiral) and rebuilt the navy and revised naval tactics. From The Gallery of Portraits, Volume II, by Charles Knight (London, 1833) .
