Anthony Ashley Cooper, 7th Earl of Shaftesbury (1801-1885), c. 1880. English statesman, moral philosopher, philanthropist and factory reformer. He pushed a series of reform bills through Parliament, including the Factory Acts of 1847, 1850 and 1859, which introduced a 10-hour working day, and the Coal Mines Act of 1842, which banned the underground employment of woman and children under the age of 13.
