Detroit, Michigan, A statue of Father Jacques Marquette, one of four French explorers who paved the way for the European settlement of Michigan. The statue, on the campus of Wayne State University, was carved by Julius Theodore Melchers. It was part of Detroit's original city hall until that building was demolished in 1961
