North Platte, Nebraska - The sand tower at Union Pacific Railroad's Bailey Yard, the largest rail yard in the world. The sand tower loads locomotives' sand tanks. Sand is used for traction when wheels slip. The yard handles 14, 000 rail cars every day. The yard's operations are visible from the the UP's eight-story Golden Spike Tower and visitor center.
