After the lifting of the almost one-year Berlin Blockade on 12 May 1949, a mass rally takes place in front of Schöneberg Rathaus, where also a delegation of the parliamentary council takes part in. (L-r) SPD politician Franz Neumann, governing Berlin mayor Ernst Reuter, president of the parliamentary council, Konrad Adenauer, SPD politician Carlo Schmid (speaker's desk), and the chairman of the Berlin city council, Otto Suhr. 50 years ago, on 24 June 1948, the USSR imposed a blockade on Berlin as a reaction to the currency reform. All land and waterways were blocked for passenger and freight traffic between West Berlin and West Germany. The supply of the West Berlin population and the western allied occupation took place by an airlift established by the USA and Great Britain.
