A soldier of the US army looks at a unit of armoured carriers in offensive position during a big winter manoeuvre of the US army on the military training area Grafenwöhr on 5 February 1959. The highlight of the manoeuvre, in which around 60.000 soldiers participated, was a simulation of a nuclear attack observed from the "Feldherrenghügel" by around 40 NATO generals.
