Aerial photograph of the manoeuvre area with smoke and shot to pieces on the military training area Grafenwöhr in Bavaria on 5 Febrauary 1959. Grafenwöhr was scene of the big winter manoeuvre "Free Play" of the US army, in which about 60.000 soldiers participated. The highlight of the manoeuvres was the simulation of a nuclear attack, which was observed from the "Feldherrenhügel" by around 40 NATO generals.
