Soldiers of the US Army standing on the western side of Berlin and People's Police officers of the GDR, with water guns, standing on the eastern side of Berlin on 24th August 1961 at checkpoint Friedrichstraße in Berlin. From the 13th August 1961, the day of the construction of the Wall, until the fall of the Wall on the 9th November 1989, the Federal Republic of Germany and the GDR were seperated into West and East by an 'Iron Curtain'.
