The abbot of the monastery, Gregorio Diamara (m) thanks officers of the Wehrmacht for safekeeping of art treasures. The monstery was attacked by Allied combat aircrafts on the 15th of February in 1944, although it was not included in German defence positions and there were no German soldiers around. Almost no monks were killed. The library and art treasure had been taken to the Vatikan city preventively before.
