A Tiger II tank of the Wehrmacht in position during the Ardennes Offensive, called Operation Watch on the Rhine. It was Adolf Hitler's last try to fight back the Allied forces from the 16th of December in 1944 on. After some success at an early stage, German troops had to pull back to their initial position in the middle of January in 1945. About 20,000 German and 30,000 Allied soldiers lost their lives during the offensive. The Normandy landings of the Allied on the 6th of June in 1944 sealed the downfall of the National Socialists. The advance of the Allied forces was not to be kept back, World War II in Europe ended with Germany's capitulation on the 8th of May in 1945.
