Cuban leader Fidel Castro during a visit to the Bay of Pigs on the southern coast of Cuba. On 17 April 1961, CIA-trained and -equipped Cuban exiles landed here in an attempt to topple the Castro regime. The failed coup attempt resulted in a permanent deterioration of US-Cuban relations.
