A dispetto del nome con cui è conosciuto, il soggetto del mosaico pavimentale rappresenta una grande battuta di cattura, non caccia, di bestie selvatiche per i giochi negli anfiteatri dell'impero a Roma: nessun animale viene infatti abbattuto ed i cacciatori usano le armi solo per difendersi.

In spite of the name with which it is known (The Great Hunt), the subject of the floor mosaic represents a great capture. It does not represent hunting.Wild beasts are captured for the games in the amphitheatres of the Roman Empire: no animal is in fact shot down and hunters use only weapons to defend themselves.
