Sassuolo, Este Ducal Palace, Gallery of Bacchus: "The bacchantes kill Orpheus with stones and sticks for refusing to sing the praises of Bacchus". The painting depicts a marina dominated by a stack while in the foreground there is an allegorical figure of an old man (it depicts the Ebro, the river into which Orpheus' head will be thrown). It is one of the forty-one panels with scenes painted by Jean Boulanger which narrate the events of Bacchus. Wall tempera painting, 1650 - 52.
