Sassuolo, Este Ducal Palace, the Bacchus Gallery: “Lycurgus made mad by Bacchus”.
The painting with the vast landscape depicts, in front of a large double tree, Lycurgus, king of the Edonians, driven mad by Bacchus for having the vines cut down in his kingdom. The king is playing with a group of children while Bacchus watches the scene. It is one of the forty-one panels with scenes painted by Jean Boulanger which narrate the events of Bacchus. Wall tempera painting, 1650 - 52.
