A replica chest in the Medieval Merchant's House, 58 French Street, Southampton, Hampshire, 1988. The house contains replica medieval furnishings that might be expected in a wealthy merchants house of the period. Each one has been copied from a surviving example or contemporary illustration. The house is one of the earliest surviving merchant's houses in England. It was constructed around 1290 as both a place of business and residence for John Fortin, a wealthy merchant who traded with merchants from Bordeaux, France.
