Warkworth Castle, Northumberland, showing the Gray Mare's Tail tower and the keep from the east, 1994. The tower was begun in the 13th century, and is notable for its archiac carvings depicting human heads and crucifix. Warkworth Castle was the home of the Percy family, who at times wielded more power in the North than the King himself.
