Kitchen hearth, Portland Castle, Weymouth, Dorset, 1998. The bread oven can be seen to the left. Food for the garrison was cooked in the huge kitchen fireplace. Portland Castle was built as an artillery fort by Henry VIII in the 1540s to protect Weymouth harbour against French and Spanish invasion.
