Gun embrasure at Calshot Castle, Hampshire, 1995. One is seen here complete with cannon. In the 1770s the curtain wall was lowered and the heads were removed from the gun embrasures. Calshot Castle was built in 1539-40 as an artillery fort to guard the entrance to Southampton Water against the threat of invasion.
