The Millennium Dome, on a former gasworks site next to the River Thames in Greenwich, was erected in 1997-9 to house a visitor attraction for the Millennium. It is a huge structure with a circumference of 1km and a height of 50m. Its remarkable design is based on a net of cables with a fabric covering.
