Tower, old fire station, Silver Road, Bristol, 2000. The hoses used by the Fire Brigade are fabric and require drying after use. Bristol's first fire brigade was set up in 1718 as the Bristol Crown Fire Office, although brigades at this time were run by insurance companies and only extinguished fires in premises displaying a fire-mark, a metal sign fixed to a building displaying a policy number. This building dates from a time when fire brigades were under local authority control.
