Excavation at Avebury, Wiltshire, 1922. The great henge at Avebury dates from circa 2600-2100 BC and has been designated a World Heritage Site. A major campaign of excavation took place between 1908 and 1922, directed by Harold St George Gray for the British Association for the Advancement of Science. This deep section through the ditch helped to established a Neolithic date for the monument.
