Albert Embankment, Lambeth, London, c1870-1900. General view looking north. Sir Joseph Bazalgette laid out the Albert Embankment on the south bank of the Thames between 1866 and 1869. It stretches from Vauxhall Bridge to Westminster Bridge and was designed to protect low-lying areas of Lambeth from flooding as well as providing a new thoroughfare along the river bypassing the congested streets of the area.
