'The Garden of No 10 Downing Street', c1740. The two figures are thought to be Spencer Compton, 1st Earl of Wilmington, who became First Lord of the Treasury in 1742, and George Pitt, 1st Baron Rivers. The park beyond is St James' Park, with a canal which was later replaced by the Serpentine. 10 Downing Street later became the London home of the Prime Minister, as it still is today.
