Légende
'James Selby's Brighton Coach outside the New White Horse Cellar, Piccadilly, c1888. Coach-and-four with passengers. Selby was the best-known professional coachman of the period, and this work was possibly painted to commemorate his famous drive from London to Brighton and back in under eight hours which he undertook in 1888 for a wager of a thousand pounds. The scene is Abraham Hatchett's Hotel, Coffee House and White Horse Cellar founded in 1753, starting point for the mail coaches.
