'The Beheading of the Rebel Lords on Great Tower Hill', c1746. The execution of the leaders of the Jacobite rebels captured after the Battle of Culloden. A huge crowd has gathered outside the Tower of London. Special stands have been erected, street sellers are hawking snacks and 'last confessions', and soldiers stand guard round the scaffold. Priests are in attendance as the lords are beheaded one by one. A coffin lies ready. The account below states that the 'King's troops under the valiant Duke of Cumberland' defeated the rebels, including Lord Balmarino and the Earl of Kilmarnock, who were sentenced to death, and executed on the 18th August.
