Légende
'Turn Him Out! - Ratcliff', 1872, showing a crowd spilling out of a doorway. A shaft of light from the interior falls directly on a man with his head thrownback and an arm outstretched. A figure in the doorway appears to be trying to reach him. Two men and a child in rags watch on the right. Three women lean out of a window to watch the scene. Taken from "London: A Pilgrimage" by Blanchard Jerrold and Gustave Doré. "A Pilgrimage" was a comprehensive portrait of London, but although the book was a commercial success many of the critics disliked it. Several were upset that Jerrold and Doré had concentrated on the poverty that existed in London.
