Légende

Woman Swearing a Child, 18th century. In front of a judge a pregnant woman lies under oath that the rich nobleman is the father of her unborn child. Behind her is the real father. The nobleman holds his hands up and denies being the father. His wife, next to him angrily gerates him. The judge therefore makes the man provide for the child and the woman. The woman is in direct contrast to Hogarth's heroine in A Harlot's Progress, as this 'working' woman has managed to find a source for early retirement.
