Légende
'The Lottery', 18th century. A theatre stage upon which the allegorical figures of virtue and vice perform a production. Hogarth explains all the figures on the stage below the image. This was Hogarth's way of criticising the government for raising money by lottery. It is based on Raphael's paintings 'Dispute' and 'School of Athens'.
