The frontispiece and an explanation to the Story Hudibras, 18th century. A portrait of the author Samuel Butler. Below him a satyr drives a chariot that is being pulled by Hudibras and his squire Ralph. Behind it a man in a mask, a jester and a figure with two animal heads walk chained to the back of the chariot. In the left hand corner a stayr is showing a young child a verse in a book. In the right hand corner a satyr shows a woman her reflection in a mirror. Plate I from the story Hudibras, written by Samuel Butler. Hudibras is a colonel in the Cromwellian army. The story shows him getting involved in various misadventures, where he shows himself to be stupid, greedy and dishonest.
