Jessie Kenney, Brighton, c1909. She was personal secretary to Emmeline Pethick-Lawrence, and was the youngest of the Kenney family to become involved in the campaign. Militant activities, in particular the 'pestering' of Cabinet Ministers, were her speciality. Hearing her describe her experiences in prison during the summer of 1908 persuaded Constance Lytton to support the WSPU's militancy. (Up to this time the latter had been unhappy about the WSPU's escalating militant methods.) In December 1909 Jessie tried to gain admittance to a meeting with Prime Minister Asquith at No.10 Downing Street, disguised as a telegraph boy, and nearly succeeded.
