Ronnie Peterson, 1973. Swedish Formula 1 driver Ronnie Peterson finished as runner-up to Jackie Stewart in the World Drivers' Championship in 1971, in only his second season. Peterson was regarded as an exceptionally talented driver, and he won a total of 10 Grands Prix. In 1978 he died of injuries sustained in an accident at the start of the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, ironically the circuit at which he had enjoyed the most success, with a total of three victories.
