Légende

'The Real Irish Court; or, The Head Centre and The Dis-Senters', 1866.This cartoon depicts an outbreak of violence amongst the Irish Fenian movement. The Irish are depicted as ignorant troublemakers, a typically racist prejudice of the time. It relates in particular to a report in Punch, under the title 'Kilkenny Cats', that the Head Centre of the Fenian movement had issued many thousands of pounds in bonds without the authority of the Senate or its representative. Having invalidated the bonds, the Fenian Senate formally impeached and deposed its President and the Secretary of the Treasury. From Punch, or the London Charivari, January 6, 1866.
