'Tinct: Reform: Comp:', 1866. Mr Gladstone remarks There, Mr D! You'd better take it all at once; The more you Look at it, The Worse you'll Like it. The 'pharmacist' Mr Gladstone has concocted a tincture which he presents for immediate consumption by the unwilling Disraeli. Following the very narrow majority of the Franchise Bill recently, Mr Gladstone proceeded to introduce the Redistribution Bill. This was in the latest attempt to achieve parliamentary reform. The fact that the two had been separated had led to a number of Liberals voting against their own party. For the opposition, Disraeli was vigorous in his opposition to the separation of the issues, even though he had long held the view that parliamentary reform was right and inevitable. Eventually, Gladstone announced that he would accept the pressure and combine both Franchise and Redistribution into one Reform Bill. From Punch, or the London Charivari, May 26, 1866.
