Woman's Wrongs, 1874. A brutish working-class husband prepares to beat his wife who still bears the insignia of previous violence. The man tells his terrified wife that the authorities are not interested, as he throws at her the newspaper in which the comments printed in the caption to this cartoon are reported. In the House of Commons, the matter of violence towards women within marriage had been raised, but Disraeli seemed to use the occasion to gain laughs, whilst allowing the matter to be shelved again. From Punch, or the London Charivari, May 30, 1874.
