'Convention-al Politeness', 1887. John Bull, the representative of the British people, handed over the Suez Canal Convention to France. This re-established the terms upon which Britain and France took responsibility for the working of the Canal, after, under Disraeli, Britain had purchased nearly half of the shares in the Company in 1876.
