Roman signal station, Old Burrow, Countisbury, Devon, 2008. Aerial view of a Roman fortlet and signal station overlooking the Bristol Channel near Lynmouth, Exmoor. It was probably built in about 51AD to monitor sea traffic and as a beacon to pass messages along the coast. The active life of this facility probably lasted only a few years from shortly after the Roman invasion until the occupation of South Wales. The earthworks are still quite prominent.
