Dartmouth Castle, Devon, c2000s(?). View from the entrance to the Dart Estuary with the gun tower (1481), north gun platform (1539-1544) and St Petroc's Church (1641) visible. Begun in the late 14th century, the castle stands on a rocky promontory which juts out into the Dart estuary. Built to protect the merchants of Dartmouth, it was one of the earliest castles designed with artillery in mind.
